Study Abroad

Why Study Abroad?

The Study Abroad Program at Saint Francis University aims to prepare students for meaningful professional and personal lives in a culturally complex world.  Students who study abroad develop functional language skills and knowledge of cultures different from their own.  Such skills and knowledge increase students’ abilities to communicate across cultures and to appreciate all forms of diversity.

Studying abroad also helps students develop a global vision, one of the eight Franciscan Goals of Higher Education at Saint Francis University.  As a community dedicated to the pursuit of justice and non-violent conflict resolution, the University aims to produce graduates who embrace all classes of people and respect all cultures, all races, and all religions. Understanding cultures different from our own makes respectful cross-cultural exchange possible and enhances students’ abilities to make meaningful contributions in a variety of communities.

Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Because of its goal of developing a global vision in all students, Saint Francis University is committed to expanding access to study abroad opportunities.  Students planning on studying abroad are encouraged to apply for financial support for study abroad, which is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic performance.

Saint Francis offers two kinds of financial support for study abroad: standard financial aid, and a General Education scholarship funded through the generous support of Saint Francis University faculty.

To apply for standard financial aid, students should contact the Financial Aid Office at Saint Francis (x3010).

To apply for the General Education study abroad scholarship, students must submit a two-page, double-spaced essay in which they discuss how their study abroad plans relate to their academic development and their professional goals.  Contact the General Education office at x3149 for submission deadlines and for other information related to study abroad.
